Compassion is often defined as being loving, merciful and having a willingness to help others. Unfortunately, in today’s world compassion isn’t something we see very often. A prime example that we see on a regular basis is a mothers compassion towards her child.
However, we are all called by a higher power to be compassionate to our fellow human beings. If you read the blog last week about forgiveness, you understand that compassion and forgiveness do not come easy and are goals that you have to work towards.
Let’s talk about a couple of examples to help us on our journey towards compassion.
Be a good listener
One of the best ways to show our compassion is to listen. I always say there is a difference between hearing and listening. Listening is a true skill that is learned over time. It’s taking interest in what the person is saying. I try to offer feedback throughout the conversation to assure the individual that I’m truly listening and I take to heart what he person is telling us. Sometimes the best way to be compassionate is to shut up for a few minutes and let another person talk.
Seeing things from the other persons perspective
Compassion doesn’t always mean being right. Sometimes we need to see things from the other perspective. While you may or may not agree with the another person’s feelings or thoughts or opinions never the less being open minded allows one to be more compassionate.
Alternative solutions
Repeating back the parties story. Typically they will elaborate in detail and think deeper about their concern or issue.
The reason things from the other persons perspective on for this is so that it allows the other party to see from your perspective their point.
Compassion is always trying to respect others even if they’re your polar opposite.
The Bottom Line
Compassion is the true test of our connection to all others in God’s eyes.
